Parables lyrics –The Mercy Seat

The song tells the story of a man about to be executed by the electric chair. The “Mercy Seat” refers both to the kaporet (the lid of the Ark of the Covenant) and to the electric chair. The song is laden with allusions to Christianity; in the Old Testament, the mercy seat is the symbol of the throne of God over the Ark of the Covenant.

Who is Nick Cave?

Nicholas Edward Cave AO (born 22 September 1957) is an Australian singer, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional actor. Known for his baritone voice and for fronting the rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Cave’s music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences and lyrical obsessions with death, religion, love and violence.

Combining this song with the basic introduction of the author, I can know that his works often focus on death, religion and violence.

Why did he write this song?

Idea

I extracted the key words of the lyrics, arranged these key words in the font I designed, and then made an e-book with these key words of the lyrics, and I would make it into a video format.

This song is related to religion. I think water can be a metaphor for religion. I plan to extract the element of water for font design and finally combine the lyrics.

I want to learn from bob Dylan’s MV- Subterranean Homesick Blues
